Chapter: The Command To Women Who Are Praying Behind Men Not To Raise Their Heads From Prostration Before The Men Have Done So

Narrator:Sahl ibn Sa‘d

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ الرِّجَالَ عَاقِدِي أُزُرِهِمْ فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ مِثْلَ الصِّبْيَانِ مِنْ ضِيقِ الأُزُرِ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ يَا مَعْشَرَ

النِّسَاءِ لاَ تَرْفَعْنَ رُءُوسَكُنَّ حَتَّى يَرْفَعَ الرِّجَالُ ‏.‏

Sahl b. Sa'd reported:

I saw men having tied (the ends) of their lower garments around their necks, like children, due to shortage of cloth and offering their prayers behind the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). One of the proclaimers said: O womenfolk, do not lift your heads till men raise (them).

قَوْله : ( رَأَيْت الرِّجَال عَاقِدِي أُزُرهمْ ) مَعْنَاهُ عَقَدُوهَا لِضِيقِهَا لِئَلَّا يُكْشَف شَيْء مِنْ الْعَوْرَة فَفِيهِ الِاحْتِيَاط فِي سَتْر الْعَوْرَة وَالتَّوَثُّق بِحِفْظِ السُّتْرَة. وَقَوْله : ( يَا مَعْشَر النِّسَاء لَا تَرْفَعُنَّ رُءُوسكُنَّ حَتَّى يَرْفَع الرِّجَال ) مَعْنَاهُ لِئَلَّا يَقَع بَصَر اِمْرَأَة عَلَى عَوْرَة رَجُل اِنْكَشَفَ وَشَبَه ذَلِكَ. وَاَللَّه تَعَالَى أَعْلَم بِالصَّوَابِ , وَإِلَيْهِ الْمَرْجِع وَالْمَآب.…

I saw the people tying their wrappers over their necks like children due to the narrowness of the wrappers behind the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) during prayer. Someone said: Body of women, do not raise your heads until the men raise (their heads).

Authentic Sahih al-Bukhari 1215

The people used to offer the prayer with the Prophet (ﷺ) with their waist-sheets tied round their necks because of the shortness of the sheets and the women were ordered not to lift their heads till the men had sat straight.

كَانَ النَّاسُ يُصَلُّونَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَهُمْ عَاقِدُو أُزْرِهِمْ مِنَ الصِّغَرِ عَلَى رِقَابِهِمْ، فَقِيلَ لِلنِّسَاءِ ‏"‏ لاَ تَرْفَعْنَ رُءُوسَكُنَّ حَتَّى يَسْتَوِيَ الرِّجَالُ جُلُوسًا ‏"

Authentic Sahih al-Bukhari 866

(the wife of the Prophet) In the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) the women used to get up when they finished their compulsory prayers with Taslim. The Prophet (ﷺ) and the men would stay on at their places as long as Allah will. When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up, the men would then get up.

كُنَّ إِذَا سَلَّمْنَ مِنَ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ قُمْنَ، وَثَبَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَمَنْ صَلَّى مِنَ الرِّجَالِ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ، فَإِذَا قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَامَ الرِّجَالُ‏.‏

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: One of you who believes in Allah and in the Last Day should not raise her head until the men raise their heads (after prostration) lest they should see the private parts of men.

مَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُنَّ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلاَ تَرْفَعْ رَأْسَهَا حَتَّى يَرْفَعَ الرِّجَالُ رُءُوسَهُمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ كَرَاهَةَ أَنْ يَرَيْنَ مِنْ عَوْرَاتِ الرِّجَالِ ‏.‏
