Authentic hadith of Sahih Muslim Muttafaq ‘alayh (Bukhari and Muslim) Sahih Muslim 36a

Narrator:Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَجُلاً يَعِظُ أَخَاهُ فِي الْحَيَاءِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏

الْحَيَاءُ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ ‏"

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man preaching to his brother about modesty; he said: "Modesty is part of faith."

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man advising his brother to refrain from excessive modesty, and he clarified to him that modesty is part of faith and brings nothing but good.

Modesty is a noble manner that prompts one to do what is good and refrain from detestable things.

Lessons

What prevents one from doing good is not called modesty; rather, it is shyness, helplessness, weakness, and cowardice.
Modesty towards Allah Almighty is to carry out His commands and shun His prohibitions.
Modesty towards people means respecting and treating them in the way they deserve and avoiding things usually regarded as reprehensible.

Explanation in Arabic

سَمِعَ النبيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم رجلًا ينصح أخاه أن يترك كثرةَ الحياء! فبَيَّن له أن الحياء من الإيمان، وأنه لا يأتي إلا بخير.

والحياء خُلقٌ يَحْمِلُ على فِعْل الجميل وترك القبيح.

ما يَمنعُك من الخير لا يُسمَّى حياءً، بل يُسمى خَجَلًا وعَجْزًا وخَوَرًا وجُبْنًا.
الحياء من الله عز وجل يكون بفعل المأمورات، وترك المحظورات.
الحياء مِن الخَلق يكون باحترامهم، وإنزالهم منازلهم، واجتناب ما يقبح عادةً.

The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a man who was admonishing his brother regarding Haya' (pious shyness from committing religeous indiscretions) and was saying, "You are very shy, and I am afraid that might harm you." On that, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Leave him, for Haya' is (a part) of Faith."

دَعْهُ فَإِنَّ الْحَيَاءَ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ ‏"

Authentic Muttafaq ‘alayh (Bukhari and Muslim) Sahih Muslim 36b

He (the Holy Prophet) happened to pass by a mass of Ansar who was instructing his brother (about modesty).

The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by a man of the Ansar when he was giving his brother a warning against modesty. The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said : Leave him alone, for modesty is a part of faith.

فَإِنَّ الْحَيَاءَ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ ‏"

Authentic Muttafaq ‘alayh (Bukhari and Muslim) Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2615

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by a man and he was chastising his brother about modesty, so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Al-Haya' is part of faith."

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] passed by a man who was censuring his brother about modesty. He said: "Let him be, for modesty is part of faith."
