وَحَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَشْهَبِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَ عَادَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ مَعْقِلَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ الْمُزَنِيَّ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ فَقَالَ مَعْقِلٌ إِنِّي مُحَدِّثُكَ حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَوْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ لِي حَيَاةً مَا حَدَّثْتُكَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏"‏

مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَسْتَرْعِيهِ اللَّهُ رَعِيَّةً يَمُوتُ يَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَهُوَ غَاشٌّ لِرَعِيَّتِهِ إِلاَّ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ الْجَنَّةَ ‏"

Ma‘qil ibn Yasār (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say:

"There is no one whom Allah puts in a position of authority, and he dies on the day he dies while cheating those under his authority except that Allah will forbid Paradise for him."

Reported by Muslim (No. 142e, 142a, 142d, 142g, 142h), Al-Bukhari (No. 7150) and Ad-Darimi (No. 2676).

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs that if Allah Almighty puts someone in authority over people, be it public authority, like the ruler, or a private one, like a man in his house and a woman in her house, and he neglects the right of those under his authority, cheats them, and acts insincerely towards them, ruining their worldly and religious rights, then he deserves this severe punishment.

Lessons

  • This warning applies to the ruler and his deputies and to anyone whom Allah puts in charge of responsibility.
  • Anyone who assumes some authority over Muslims should be sincere to them, make his best effort to discharge the responsibility assigned to him and beware of treachery.
  • The Hadīth reveals the seriousness of the responsibility of anyone who assumes authority, public or private, and great or small.

Explanation in Arabic

يُخبِرُ النبيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أنَّ كلَّ أحدٍ جَعَلَه الله تعالى واليًا ومسؤولًا على الناس، سواء كانت ولاية عامّة كالأمير، أو ولاية خاصة كالرجل في بيته والمرأة في بيتها، فقَصَّرَ في حق رعيته، وغَشَّها ولم ينصحْ لها، فَضَيَّعَ حقوقَها الدينية والدنيوية، فقد استحقَّ هذه العقوبة الشديدة.

  • هذا الوعيد ليس خاصًّا بالإمام الأعظم ونُوَّابِه، بل هو عامٌّ في كل مَن استرعاه الله رعية.
  • الواجب على كل مَن وَلي شيئًا من أمر المسلمين أن يَنصحَ لهم، وأن يجتهد في أداء الأمانة، وأن يَحذَرَ الخيانة.
  • عِظَم مسؤولية كلِّ مَن ولي رعية عامّة أو خاصّة، كبيرة أو صغيرة.
