Narrator:Abu ad-Dardā’

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ، سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يَقُولُ ‏

"‏ الْوَالِدُ أَوْسَطُ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ فَأَضِعْ ذَلِكَ الْبَابَ أَوِ احْفَظْهُ ‏"

Abu Darda' heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say that:

"The father is the middle door of Paradise (i.e. the best way to Paradise), so it is up to you whether you take advantage of it or not."

Reported by Ibn Majah (No. 3663), At-Tirmidhi (No. 1900) and Ahmad (No. 26239, 26252, 26272).

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan Ibn Majah

قَوْله ( الْوَالِد أَوْسَط ) أَيْ سَبَب لِدُخُولِ الْوَلَد مِنْ أَحْسَن أَبْوَاب الْجَنَّة وَقَالَ السُّيُوطِيُّ أَوْسَط الْأَبْوَاب أَيْ خَيْرهَا ( فَأَضِعْ ) مِنْ الْإِضَاعَة وَلَيْسَ الْمُرَاد التَّخْيِير بَيْن الْأَمْرَيْنِ بَلْ الْمُرَاد التَّوْبِيخ عَلَى الْإِضَاعَة وَالْحَثّ عَلَى الْحِفْظ مِثْل فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِنْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ قَالَ السُّيُوطِيُّ ظَاهِره أَنَّهُ مِنْ تَتِمَّة الْحَدِيث الْمَرْفُوع وَفِي رِوَايَة الطَّبَرَانِيِّ أَنَّهُ مُنْدَرِج مِنْ كَلَام الرَّاوِي.…

He said that a man came and said : "I have a wife whom my mother has ordered me to divorce." So Abu Ad-Darda said: " I heard the Messenger of Allah saying: 'The father is the middle gate to Paradise. So if you wish, then neglect that door, or protect it.'"

"‏ الْوَالِدُ أَوْسَطُ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ فَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَضِعْ ذَلِكَ الْبَابَ أَوِ احْفَظْهُ ‏"
