حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ شُجَاعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَالِمٌ الأَفْطَسُ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ ‏

"‏ الشِّفَاءُ فِي ثَلاَثٍ شَرْبَةِ عَسَلٍ وَشَرْطَةِ مِحْجَمٍ وَكَيَّةٍ بِنَارٍ وَأَنْهَى أُمَّتِي عَنِ الْكَىِّ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ رَفَعَهُ

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said:

“Healing is in three things: A drink of honey, the glass of the cupper, and cauterizing with fire, but I forbid my nation to use cauterization.” And he attributed it to the Prophet (ﷺ).

Reported by Ibn Majah (No. 3491), Al-Bukhari (No. 5680, 5681) and Ahmad (No. 2098).

Classical commentary

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan Ibn Majah

قَوْله ( الشِّفَاء فِي ثَلَاث ) أَيْ مُتَفَرِّقَة لَا مُجْتَمِعَة ( وَشَرْطَة مِحْجَم ) مِنْ شَرَطَ الْحَاجِم إِذَا ضَرَبَ عَلَى مَوْضِع الْحِجَامَة ضَرْبًا شَقَّ بِهِ الْجِلْد وَإِضَافَتهَا إِلَى الْمِحْجَم لِلْمُلَابَسَةِ ( عَنْ الْكَيّ ) فَإِنَّهُ أَشَدّ الثَّلَاث فَلَا يَنْبَغِي اِسْتِعْمَاله إِلَّا لِضَرُورَةٍ وَبِالْجُمْلَةِ فَالنَّهْي لِلتَّنْزِيهِ.…

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, "If there is any healing in your medicines, then it is in cupping, a gulp of honey or branding with fire (cauterization) that suits the ailment, but I don't like to be (cauterized) branded with fire."

إِنْ كَانَ فِي شَىْءٍ مِنْ أَدْوِيَتِكُمْ ـ أَوْ يَكُونُ فِي شَىْءٍ مِنْ أَدْوِيَتِكُمْ ـ خَيْرٌ فَفِي شَرْطَةِ مِحْجَمٍ، أَوْ شَرْبَةِ عَسَلٍ، أَوْ لَذْعَةٍ بِنَارٍ تُوَافِقُ الدَّاءَ، وَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَكْتَوِيَ ‏"
