Chapter: What was narrated concerning visiting the graves

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏

"‏ زُورُوا الْقُبُورَ فَإِنَّهَا تُذَكِّرُكُمُ الآخِرَةَ ‏"

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Visit the graves, for they will remind you of the Hereafter.”

Reported by Ibn Majah (No. 1569).

قَوْله ( زُورُوا الْقُبُور ) الْأَمْر لِلْإِبَاحَةِ وَالرُّخْصَة أَوْ النَّدْب كَمَا يَدُلّ عَلَيْهِ التَّعْلِيل قِيلَ هُوَ يَعُمّ الرِّجَال وَالنِّسَاء وَقِيلَ مَخْصُوص بِالرِّجَالِ كَمَا هُوَ الظَّاهِر مِنْ الْخِطَاب لَكِنَّ عُمُوم عِلَّة التَّذْكِير الْوَارِدَة فِي الْأَحَادِيث قَدْ تُؤَيِّد عُمُوم الْحُكْم إِلَّا أَنْ يَمْنَع كَوْنه تَذْكِرَة فِي حَقّ النِّسَاء لِتَمَكُّنِ غَفْلَتهنَّ.…

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: I forbade you to visit graves, but you may now visit them, for in visiting them there is a reminder (of death).

نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ فَزُورُوهَا فَإِنَّ فِي زِيَارَتِهَا تَذْكِرَةً ‏"

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: We forbade you to eat their meat for more than three days in order that you might have abundance; now Allah has produced abundance, so you may eat, store up and seek reward. Beware, these days are days of eating, drinking and remembrance of Allah, Most High.
