Chapter: To offer As-Salat (the prayers) on a Khumra (a small mat, hardly sufficient for the face and hands while prostrating during Salat)

Narrator:Maymūna bint al-Hārith

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ، عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم

يُصَلِّي عَلَى الْخُمْرَةِ‏.‏

Narrated Maimuna:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to pray on Khumra.

Explanation in Arabic

قالت ميمونة رضي الله عنها: كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي على حصيرٍ صغيرٍ قدر ما يسجد عليه، ينسج من السعف، وسمي خمرةً لأنه يستر الوجه من الأرض، ففيه جواز الصلاة على الحصير، ومثله ما في معناه مما يفرش سواء كان مأخوذًا من حيوان أو نبات بلا كراهة، وهذا إذا لم يكن فيه ما يشغل المصلي، ويلهيه عن صلاته من نقش أو غيره وإلا فيكره.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray at night and she (‘A’ishah) would lie between him and the qiblah, sleeping on the bed on which he would sleep. When he wanted to offer the witr prayer, he awakened her and she offered the witr prayer.
