Narrator:Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar

وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا صَخْرُ بْنُ جُوَيْرِيَةَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏

"‏ أَرَانِي أَتَسَوَّكُ بِسِوَاكٍ، فَجَاءَنِي رَجُلاَنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الآخَرِ، فَنَاوَلْتُ السِّوَاكَ الأَصْغَرَ مِنْهُمَا، فَقِيلَ لِي كَبِّرْ‏.‏ فَدَفَعْتُهُ إِلَى الأَكْبَرِ مِنْهُمَا ‏"

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw in my dream that I was using a tooth-stick when two men came to me, one of them older than the other. I gave the tooth-stick to the younger one, but I was told to give it to the older one first, so I did."

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saw in a dream that he was using a tooth-stick and two men came to him, one older than the other. He wanted to give it to the younger one, but it was said to him "give the older one first!". So he gave it to the older one.

Explanation in Arabic

رأى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في النوم أنه كان يَتَسَوَّك بسواك، فجاءه رجلان أحدهما أكبر من الآخر، فأراد أن يعطيه إلى الأصغر منهما، فقيل له: قدم الأكبر في الإعطاء، فأعطاه إلى الكبير منهما.

  • رؤيا الأنبياء حق؛ لأنها وحي معصوم؛ ولذلك ما يحدث فيها يدخل في التشريع.
  • استحباب استخدام السواك؛ لأنه سنة نبوية مؤكدة، وهو مطهرة للفم، مرضاة للرب، وبخاصة عند الوضوء والصلاة وقراءة القرآن.
  • أنَّ استعمال سواك الغير بإذنه غير مكروه، ويستحب غسله ثم استعماله.
  • فيه تقديم ذي السن في السواك، ويلتحق به الطعام والشراب والمشي والكلام.
  • يجوز اجتهاد رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- لكن لا يقر على خطأ بل يصوَّب مباشرة.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "It was shown to me in my dream that I was cleaning my teeth with a Miswak and two men came to me, one being older than the other. I gave the Miswak to the younger one, but I was asked to give it to the older, which I did". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Authentic Mishkat al-Masabih 385

Ibn ‘Umar reported the Prophet as saying, “I had a dream in which I was using a tooth-stick, when two men, one older than the other, came to me. I handed the tooth-stick to the younger of the two and was told to respect the senior, so I handed it to the older.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)
