Chapter: While urinating or defecating, never face the Qiblah except when you are screened by a building or a wall or something like that

حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

إِذَا أَتَى أَحَدُكُمُ الْغَائِطَ فَلاَ يَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَلاَ يُوَلِّهَا ظَهْرَهُ، شَرِّقُوا أَوْ غَرِّبُوا ‏"

Narrated Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If anyone of you goes to an open space for answering the call of nature he should neither face nor turn his back towards the Qibla; he should either face the east or the west."

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani — Fath al-Bari

قَوْله : ( فَلَا يَسْتَقْبِل ) بِكَسْرِ اللَّام لِأَنَّ " لَا " نَاهِيَة وَاللَّام فِي الْقِبْلَة لِلْعَهْدِ أَيْ لِلْكَعْبَةِ. قَوْله : ( وَلَا يُوَلِّهَا ظَهْره ) وَلِمُسْلِمٍ " وَلَا يَسْتَدْبِرهَا " وَزَادَ " بِبَوْلٍ أَوْ بِغَائِطٍ " وَالْغَائِط الثَّانِي غَيْر الْأَوَّل , أُطْلِقَ عَلَى الْخَارِج مِنْ الدُّبُر مَجَازًا مِنْ إِطْلَاق اِسْم الْمَحَلّ عَلَى الْحَالّ كَرَاهِيَة لِذِكْرِهِ بِصَرِيحِ اِسْمه , وَحَصَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ جِنَاس تَامّ , وَالظَّاهِر مِنْ قَوْله " بِبَوْلٍ " اِخْتِصَاص النَّهْي بِخُرُوجِ الْخَارِج مِنْ الْعَوْرَة , وَيَكُون مَثَاره إِكْرَام الْقِبْلَة عَنْ الْمُوَاجَهَة بِالنَّجَاسَةِ , وَيُؤَيِّدهُ قَوْله فِي حَدِيث جَابِر " إِذَا هَرَقْنَا الْمَاء ". وَقِيلَ مَثَار ا…

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) forbade us to face the Qiblah when defecating or urinating, or to clean ourselves using the right hand, or to clean ourselves with less than three stones, or to clean ourselves with dung or a bone [Reported by Muslim].

The Prophet (ﷺ) went out to answer the call of nature and asked me to bring three stones. I found two stones and searched for the third but could not find it. So took a dried piece of dung and brought it to him. He took the two stones and threw away the dung and said, "This is a filthy thing."

فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ آتِيَهُ بِثَلاَثَةِ أَحْجَارٍ، فَوَجَدْتُ حَجَرَيْنِ، وَالْتَمَسْتُ الثَّالِثَ فَلَمْ أَجِدْهُ، فَأَخَذْتُ رَوْثَةً، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا، فَأَخَذَ الْحَجَرَيْنِ وَأَلْقَى الرَّوْثَةَ وَقَالَ ‏"‏ هَذَا…

"I am like a father teaching you. When any one of you goes to Al-Khala' (the toilet), let him not face toward the Qiblah nor turn his back toward it, and let him not clean himself with his right hand." And he used to tell them to use three stones, and he forbade using dung or old bones.
