حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، رضى الله عنها أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏

مَا زَالَ جِبْرِيلُ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى قُلْتُ لَيُوَرِّثَنَّهُ ‏"

‘A’ishah reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying:

Gabriel kept on commending the neighbor to me so that I thought he would make him an heir.

Classical commentary

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( مَا زَالَ جَبْرَائِيلُ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ ) : أَيْ يَأْمُرنِي بِحِفْظِ حَقّه مِنْ الْإِحْسَان إِلَيْهِ وَدَفْع الْأَذَى عَنْهُ ( حَتَّى قُلْت لِيُوَرِّثَنهُ ) : أَيْ يَأْمُر عَنْ اللَّه بِتَوْرِيثِ الْجَار مِنْ جَاره بِفَرْضِ سَهْم يُعْطَاهُ مَعَ الْأَقَارِب. وَقِيلَ الْمُرَاد أَنَّهُ يُنَزَّل مَنْزِلَة مَنْ يَرِث بِالْبِرِّ وَالصِّلَة قَالَ الْحَافِظ الْأَوَّل أَظْهَر فَإِنَّ الثَّانِي اِسْتَمَرَّ وَالْخَبَر مُشْعِر بِأَنَّ التَّوْرِيث لَمْ يَقَع , وَيُؤَيِّدهُ مَا أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيّ بِلَفْظِ " حَتَّى ظَنَنْت أَنَّهُ يَجْعَل لَهُ مِيرَاثًا " كَذَا فِي الْفَتْح. قَالَ الْمُنْذِرِيُّ وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيّ وَمُسْلِم وَالتِّرْمِذِيّ وَابْن مَاجَهْ.…

Jibrīl kept enjoining me regarding the good treatment of the neighbor to the extent that I thought he would inherit him

"Jibrīl kept enjoining me regarding the good treatment of the neighbor to the extent that I thought he would inherit him."

مَا زَالَ يُوصِينِي جِبْرِيلُ بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيُوَرِّثُهُ ‏"

Gabriel impressed upon me (kind treatment) towards the neighbour (so much) that I thought as if he would confer upon him the (right) of inheritance.

مَا زَالَ جِبْرِيلُ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ لَيُوَرِّثَنَّهُ ‏"

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of 'A'isha through another chain of transmitters.

حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، حَدَّثَنِي هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِمِثْلِهِ ‏.‏

"Jibril – may the Salawat of Allah be upon him – continued to recommend me about (treating) the neighbors so (kindly and politely), that I thought he would order me to make them heirs.”
