حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏

لاَ تَغْلِبَنَّكُمُ الأَعْرَابُ عَلَى اسْمِ صَلاَتِكُمْ أَلاَ وَإِنَّهَا الْعِشَاءُ وَلَكِنَّهُمْ يُعْتِمُونَ بِالإِبِلِ ‏"

Ibn ‘Umar reported the prophet (May peace be upon him) as saying:

The desert Arabs may not dominate you in respect of the name of your prayer. Beware! It is al-`Isha, but they milk their camels when it is fairly dark.

( لَا تَغْلِبَنكُمْ الْأَعْرَاب ) : قَالَ الشَّيْخ عِزّ الدِّين : جَرَتْ الْعَادَة أَنَّ الْعُظَمَاء إِذَا سَمَّوْا شَيْئًا بِاسْمٍ فَلَا يَلِيق الْعُدُول عَنْهُ إِلَى غَيْره لِأَنَّ ذَلِكَ تَنْقِيص لَهُمْ وَرَغْبَة عَنْ صَنِيعهمْ وَتَرْجِيح لِغَيْرِهِ عَلَيْهِ وَذَلِكَ لَا يَلِيق , وَاَللَّه سُبْحَانه قَدْ سَمَّاهَا فِي كِتَابه الْعِشَاء فِي قَوْله وَمِنْ بَعْد صَلَاة الْعِشَاء فَيُقَبَّح بَعْد تَسْمِيَة ذِي الْجَلَال وَالْإِكْرَام الْعُدُول عَنْهُ إِلَى غَيْره قَالَهُ السُّيُوطِيُّ. وَقَالَ السِّنْدِيُّ : إِنَّ الْأَعْرَاب يُسَمُّونَهَا الْعَتَمَة لِأَنَّهُمْ يُعْتِمُونَ الْإِبِل مِنْ أَعْتَمَ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الْعَتَمَة وَهِيَ الظُّلْمَة فَلَا تُكْثِر اِسْتِعْمَال ذَلِكَ الِاسْم لِمَا فِي…

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: Let the bedouin not gain upper hand over you in regard to the name of your prayer. See I (The night prayer should be called) 'Isya' (and the bedouins call it Atama (because) they milk their camels late.

لاَ تَغْلِبَنَّكُمُ الأَعْرَابُ عَلَى اسْمِ صَلاَتِكُمْ أَلاَ إِنَّهَا الْعِشَاءُ وَهُمْ يُعْتِمُونَ بِالإِبِلِ ‏"

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Let the bedouin not gain upper band over you In regard to the name of your prayer, i. e. night prayer, for it is mentioned 'Isya' in the Book of Allah (i. e. the Qur'an). (The bedouin call it 'Atama because) they make delay in milling their she-camels.

لاَ تَغْلِبَنَّكُمُ الأَعْرَابُ عَلَى اسْمِ صَلاَتِكُمُ الْعِشَاءِ فَإِنَّهَا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ الْعِشَاءُ وَإِنَّهَا تُعْتِمُ بِحِلاَبِ الإِبِلِ ‏"

Narrated by Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar

Authentic Sunan an-Nasa'i 541

"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Do not let the Bedouin make you change the name of this prayer of yours, for they delay the prayer until it is very dark because of their preoccupation with camels and milking them. Verily, it is 'Isha'.'"
