حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ الْبَزَّازُ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

مَا مِنْ قَوْمٍ يَقُومُونَ مِنْ مَجْلِسٍ لاَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ فِيهِ إِلاَّ قَامُوا عَنْ مِثْلِ جِيفَةِ حِمَارٍ وَكَانَ لَهُمْ حَسْرَةً ‏"

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"No people leave a gathering in which they did not remember Allah except that it will be as if they are leaving the carcass of a donkey, and it will be a cause of regret for them."

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed that no people attend a gathering then leave it without remembering Allah therein except that it will be as if they are leaving a gathering on the carcass of a donkey in terms of rottenness and filth because of being too preoccupied with their speech from remembering Allah. This gathering will be a source of their sorrow, loss, and eternal regret on the Day of Judgment.

Lessons

  • The warning mentioned here against heedlessness of remembering Allah is not restricted only to gatherings; rather, it includes other things as well. An-Nawawi said: It is disliked for one who sits in a place to leave it without remembering Allah Almighty therein.
  • The sorrow they experience on the Day of Judgment: is either because of missing the recompense and reward for not taking advantage of the time in obeying Allah, or because of incurring sin and being subject to punishment because of using the time in disobeying Allah.
  • If this warning is against heedlessness caused by what is permissible, then what about the prohibited gatherings that involve backbiting, talebearing, and other prohibitions?!

Explanation in Arabic

أَخْبَرَ النبيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه ما مِن قومٍ جلسوا في مجلس ثم قاموا منه ولم يذكروا الله فيه إلا قاموا عن مثل مَن اجتمع على جيفة حمار في النَّتَنِ والقَذَارة؛ وذلك لما انشغلوا في الكلام عن ذكر الله، وكان ذلك المجلسُ عليهم حسرةً يوم القيامة ونقصانًا وندامة لازمة لهم.

  • ما ذُكِر مِن التحذير عن الغفلة عن ذكر الله ليس مقتصرًا على المجالس فقط، بل يَعُمُّ غيرَها، قال النووي: يُكرَه لمَن قَعَد في مكان أن يُفارقه قبل أن يذكر الله تعالى فيه.
  • الحسرة الحاصل لهم يوم القيامة: إما بِفَوَات الأجر والثواب لعدم الاستفادة من الوقت في طاعة الله، وإما بالإثم والعقاب لإشغال الوقت بمعصية الله.
  • هذا التحذير إذا كانت هذه الغفلة بالمباحات، فكيف بالمجالس المحرَّمة التي فيها الغيبة والنميمة وغيرها؟!

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

He reported God's messenger as saying, "People who arise from an assembly in which they did not remember God will be just as if they had got up from an ass's corpse, and it will be a cause of grief to them." Ahmad and Abu Dawud transmitted it.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whenever a group of people sit in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah the Exalted, nor supplicate to elevate the rank of their Prophet, such a gathering will be a cause of grief to them. If Allah wills, He will punish them, and if He wills He will forgive them."…

وعنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ ‏"‏ما جلس قوم مجلساً لم يذكروا الله تعالى فيه، ولم يصلوا على نبيهم فيه، إلا كان عليهم ترة؛ فإن شاء عذبهم، وإن شاء غفر لهم‏"‏ ((رَوَاهُ التِّرمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: "حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ"))‏.‏
