Chapter: A man who gets up to give his seat to another man

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَهُمْ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ عَقِيلِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْخَصِيبِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَامَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ فَذَهَبَ لِيَجْلِسَ فِيهِ فَنَهَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ), another man got up from his place for him, and when he went to sit in it, the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade him.

Abu Dawud said: The name of Abu al-Khusaib is Ziyad b. 'Abd al-Rahman.

( عَنْ عَقِيل ) : بِفَتْحِ الْعَيْن وَكَسْر الْقَاف ( سَمِعْت أَبَا الْخَصِيب ) بِفَتْحِ الْخَاء الْمُعْجَمَة عَلَى وَزْن عَظِيم قَالَهُ الْحَافِظ ( فَقَامَ لَهُ ) : أَيْ لِلرَّجُلِ الْجَائِي لِيَجْلِس هُوَ فِي مَكَانه ( فَنَهَاهُ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ) : أَيْ عَنْ الْجُلُوس فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِس. وَأَخْرَجَ الْبُخَارِيّ فِي الصَّحِيح مِنْ طَرِيق سُفْيَان الثَّوْرِيّ عَنْ عُبَيْد اللَّه عَنْ نَافِع عَنْ اِبْن عُمَر عَنْ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ نَهَى أَنْ يُقَام الرَّجُل مِنْ مَجْلِسه وَيَجْلِس فِيهِ آخَر. وَأَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيّ فِي الْأَدَب الْمُفْرَد بِلَفْظِ " وَكَانَ اِبْن عُمَر إِذَا قَامَ لَهُ رَجُل مِنْ مَجْلِسه لَمْ يَجْلِس فِيهِ " و…

None should make one'& brother stand and then sit at his place (and it was common with) Ibn Umar that when any person stood in the company (with a view to making room for him) he did not sit there.

Jabir reported God’s Messenger as saying, “None of you must make his brother get up on Friday, then move to his place and sit in it, but should ask those present to make room." Muslim transmitted it.

Authentic Sahih al-Bukhari 6270

The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade that a man should be made to get up from his seat so that another might sit on it, but one should make room and spread out. Ibn `Umar disliked that a man should get up from his seat and then somebody else sit at his place.

نَهَى أَنْ يُقَامَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ وَيَجْلِسَ فِيهِ آخَرُ، وَلَكِنْ تَفَسَّحُوا وَتَوَسَّعُوا‏.‏

I heard Nazi' saying, "Ibn `Umar, said, 'The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade that a man should make another man to get up to sit in his place' ". I said to Nafi`, 'Is it for Jumua prayer only?' He replied, "For Jumua prayer and any other (prayer)."

يُقِيمَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ مِنْ مَقْعَدِهِ وَيَجْلِسَ فِيهِ‏.‏

Authentic Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2749

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Let one of you not have his brother stand from his seat then sit in it."
