Chapter: Dyeing Hair

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ خِضَابِ النَّبِيِّ، صلى الله عليه وسلم فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ

لَمْ يَخْضِبْ وَلَكِنْ قَدْ خَضَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ‏.‏

Thabit said that Anas was asked about the hair-dye of the Prophet (ﷺ). He replied:

He did not dye his hair, but Abu Bakr and 'Umar dyed their hair.

Reported by Abu Dawud (No. 4209).

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَخْضِب ) : وَفِي رِوَايَة لِلشَّيْخَيْنِ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَابَ إِلَّا يَسِيرًا وَلَكِنَّ أَبَا بَكْر وَعُمَر بَعْده خَضَبَا بِالْحِنَّاءِ وَالْكَتَم. وَحَدِيث أَنَس هَذَا وَإِنْكَاره لِخِضَابِ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَارِضهُ مَا سَبَقَ مِنْ حَدِيث أَبِي رِمْثَة , وَمَا سَيَأْتِي مِنْ حَدِيث اِبْن عُمَر أَنَّهُ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُصَفِّر لِحْيَته بِالْوَرْسِ وَالزَّعْفَرَان , وَمَا فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ وَإِنْ كَانَ أَرْجَح مِمَّا كَانَ خَارِجًا عَنْهُمَا وَلَكِنْ عَدَم عِلْم أَنَس بِوُقُوعِ الْخِضَاب مِنْهُ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَسْتَلْزِم الْعَدَم وَرِوَايَة مَنْ أَثْبَتَ أَوْلَى مِنْ رِوَايَته لِأَنَّ غَايَة مَا ف…

His face was as (bright) as the sword. Thereupon he (Jabir) said: No, it was round and like the sun and the moon. And I saw the seal near his shoulder of the size of a pigeon's egg and its color was the same as that of his body.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَأَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيْنَا شَعَرًا مِنْ شَعَرِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَخْضُوبًا

"I heard Jabir bin Samurah being asked about the gray hairs of the Prophet [SAW]. He said: 'If he put oil on his head they could not be seen, but if he did not put oil on his head, they could be seen.'"
