Chapter: The Time For 'Asr Prayer

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏

الَّذِي تَفُوتُهُ صَلاَةُ الْعَصْرِ فَكَأَنَّمَا وُتِرَ أَهْلَهُ وَمَالَهُ ‏"

Ibn 'Umar reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying:

Anyone who loses his 'Asr prayer is like a person whose family has perished and whose property has been plundered.

Abu Dawud said: 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar narrated the word utira (instead of wutira, meaning perished). The dispute on this point goes back to Ayyub. Al-Zuhri reported from Salim on the authority of this father from the Prophet (ﷺ) the word 'wutira'.

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( الَّذِي تَفُوتهُ صَلَاة الْعَصْر ) : أَيْ بِغُرُوبِ الشَّمْس أَوْ اِصْفِرَارهَا أَوْ بِخُرُوجِ وَقْتهَا الْمُخْتَار ( فَكَأَنَّمَا وُتِرَ ) : بِضَمِّ الْوَاو وَكَسْر الْفَوْقِيَّة عَلَى بِنَاء الْمَفْعُول : أَيْ سُلِبَ وَأُخِذَ ( أَهْله وَمَاله ) : بِنَصْبِهِمَا وَرَفْعهمَا , فَمَنْ رَدّ النَّقْص إِلَى الرَّجُل نَصَبَهُمَا , وَمَنْ رَدَّهُ إِلَى الْأَهْل وَالْمَال رَفَعَهُمَا أَيْ فَكَأَنَّمَا فَقَدَهُمَا بِالْكُلِّيَّةِ أَوْ نَقَصَهُمَا. قَالَ الْخَطَّابِيُّ : مَعْنَى قَوْله وُتِرَ أَيْ نُقِصَ أَوْ سُلِبَ فَبَقِيَ وِتْرًا فَرْدًا بِلَا أَهْل وَلَا مَال , يُرِيد فَلْيَكُنْ حَذَره مِنْ فَوْتهَا كَحَذَرِهِ مِنْ فَوَات أَهْله وَمَاله ( عُبَيْد اللَّه بْن عُمَر ) : اِبْن حَفْص أَحَد الْفُقَهَا…

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever misses the `Asr prayer (intentionally) then it is as if he lost his family and property."

"I heard Nawfal bin Mu'awiyah say: 'There is a prayer which if a person misses it, it is as of he has been robbed of his family and his wealth.'" Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'It is 'Asr prayer.'"
