حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُدَيْلٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، - رضى الله عنه - جَعَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَيْلَةً أَوْ يَوْمًا عِنْدَ الْكَعْبَةِ فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ ‏"‏

اعْتَكِفْ وَصُمْ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took a vow in the pre-Islamic days to spend a night or a day in devotion near the Ka'bah (in the sacred mosque). He asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about it. He said: Observe i'tikaf (i.e. spend a night or a day near the Ka'bah) and fast.

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( أَنَّ عُمَر رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُ جَعَلَ عَلَيْهِ ) : أَيْ عَلَى نَفْسه ( أَنْ يَعْتَكِف فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّة لَيْلَة أَوْ يَوْمًا ) : شَكّ الرَّاوِي ( فَقَالَ اِعْتَكِفْ وَصُمْ ) : قَالَ الْخَطَّابِيُّ : فِيهِ مِنْ الْفِقْه أَنَّ نَذْر الْجَاهِلِيَّة إِذَا كَانَ عَلَى وِفَاق حُكْم الْإِسْلَام كَانَ مَعْمُولًا بِهِ. وَفِيهِ دَلِيل عَلَى أَنَّ مَنْ حَلَفَ فِي كُفْره ثُمَّ أَسْلَمَ فَحَنِثَ أَنَّ الْكَفَّارَة وَاجِبَة عَلَيْهِ , وَهَذَا عَلَى مَذْهَب الشَّافِعِيّ. وَقَالَ أَبُو حَنِيفَة : لَا تَلْزَمهُ الْكَفَّارَة , وَفِيهِ أَيْضًا دَلِيل عَلَى وُقُوع ظِهَار الذِّمِّيّ وَوُجُوب الْكَفَّارَة عَلَيْهِ فِيهَا وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَم. وَقَالَ فِي فَتْح الْبَارِي : وَقَدْ وَرَدَ الْأَمْر بِالصَّوْمِ فِي…

When we returned from (the battle of) Hunain, `Umar asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about a vow which he had made during the Pre-lslamic period of Ignorance that he would perform I`tikaf. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered him to fulfill his vow.
