Mawlid an-Nabi marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. That he was born on a Monday is certain: asked about fasting on Mondays, he said, “That is the day on which I was born” (Muslim 1162). The 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal is the most widely accepted date; the early biographers also mention other days.

Scholars differ over celebrating it: some regard it as a commendable custom as long as it remains free of objectionable practices, while others see it as a practice that the first generations of Muslims did not observe. In Nigeria and in many other countries it is a public holiday.

Mawlid falls on 12 Rabi’ al-Awwal of every Hijri year. As the Hijri calendar is lunar, its Gregorian date moves about 11 days earlier each year.
