Biography of Ahmad Khalil Shaheen
Ahmad Khalil Shaheen: A Fine Path and an Even Finer Legacy
His recitation bears a strong resemblance to that of Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary. When he recites the Book of Allah, his mellow voice and deep feeling carry listeners into reflection and contemplation, bringing about humility and a growing desire to listen and ponder. Combining academic learning with religious scholarship, he has earned esteem and respect and deserves to be counted among the most famous reciters in the Muslim world. This is the reciter Sheikh Ahmad Khalil Shaheen, whose full name is Ahmad ibn Khalil ibn Shaheen ibn Ahmad ibn Qubais, born in 1375 AH / 1955 CE.
Ahmad Khalil Shaheen was born in Qena Governorate, in Upper Egypt, into a devout family known for its good character and for its commitment to learning and to encouraging it. As a child, while attending the local public primary school, he regularly went to the late Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sayyid Kilani, under whom he memorized the Quran within two years. Before he finished primary school, his father passed away and he moved to Sohag Governorate. There he met His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Rahman Al-Bulaini, with whom he studied the Quran for some time, completing his studies by obtaining an ijazah, after which he returned to his village in Qena Governorate.
He then traveled to Cairo to continue his pursuit of knowledge. There he enrolled at the Institute of Qira’at at Al-Azhar, where he studied the rules of tajweed for two years and the Quranic readings for three years, thus gaining a thorough command of the sciences of the Quran and its related knowledge, as well as of the seven and the ten readings. Along the way, he studied under a select group of distinguished scholars and sheikhs, most notably Sheikh Hassan Al-Halawani, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sayyid Kilani and Sheikh Abdul Raouf Barri.
After completing his studies, the sheikh held a number of positions and responsibilities: he has taught, and still teaches, Quranic exegesis in Saudi Arabia. He has also led Quran study circles in several mosques there and taken part in charitable work, particularly at the Charitable Center for Quranic Sciences, affiliated with the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da’wah and Guidance, in addition to participating in teaching workshops organized by the Saudi Ministry of Education.
Alongside his professional duties, the sheikh has supervised a number of Quran competitions, most notably the Prince Salman Competition for the Memorization of the Holy Quran, the National Guard competition and the competition of the Riyadh Education Department, not to mention his important role in many scholarly meetings and conferences on the Holy Quran at home and abroad. He was also invited to Saudi Radio as a reciter, and recorded for it a complete murattal recitation of the Quran, which is broadcast from time to time and can be downloaded online.
