John the Baptist (Yahya) was granted to his father Zechariah in answer to his supplication, when his parents were old. These verses describe him as righteous and pious, chaste, a leader and a prophet among the righteous, kind and not tyrannical, given wisdom from childhood and commanded to hold the Scripture firmly; peace be upon him.
Verses gathered from a topical index of the Quran, in Mushaf order; every verse is quoted in full.
So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allāh gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allāh and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."
