Tafsir of verse 55
Al-Mukhtasar
Joseph asked the king to put him in charge of taking care of the storehouses of wealth and food in the land of Egypt, because he would be a trustworthy guardian, with knowledge and insight about what he was taking care of.
Joseph said, “Put me in charge of the storehouses of the land20; I am indeed a good keeper and knowledgeable21.”
Notes
[20] He found himself in a better position than anyone else for those difficult days ahead, so he offered his services. [21] The two most needed traits in a treasurer.
[Yûsuf (Joseph)] said: "Set me over the store-houses of the land; I will indeed guard them with full knowledge" (as a minister of finance in Egypt).
He said: Set me over the storehouses of the land. Lo! I am a skilled custodian.
(Joseph) said: "Set me over the store-houses of the land: I will indeed guard them, as one that knows (their importance)."
He said: Place me (in authority) over the treasures of the land, surely I am a good keeper, knowing well.
He (Yusuf) said, "Set me over the lands treasuries. Surely I am constantly-persevering, (i.e., guardian) constantly-knowing."
