Other translations of verse 16

They forsake their beds, invoking their Lord with fear and hope, and spend6 out of what We have provided for them.

Notes

[6] In the way of Allah.

Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (in charity in Allâh’s Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them.2

Notes

[2] (V.32:16) Narrated Mu‘âdh bin Jabal رضي الله عنه: The Prophet (Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to him: "May I show you the gates of goodness? (They are): (1) Fasting is a screen from Hell. (2) As-Sadaqâh (deeds of charity in Allâh’s Cause) extinguishes (removes) the sins, as the water extinguishes the fire. (3) Standing in Salât (performing of prayers) by a person during the middle (or the last third) part of a night." Then Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم recited: "Their sides forsake their beds." (V.32:16) (Abu Dâwûd and Tirmidhi) (Tafsîr Al-Qurtubî).

Who forsake their beds to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of that We have bestowed on them.

Their limbs do forsake their beds of sleep, the while they call on their Lord, in Fear and Hope: and they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on them.

Their sides draw away from (their) beds, they call upon their Lord in fear and in hope, and they spend (benevolently) out of what We have given them.

Their sides often shun (their) recumbencies (i.e., beds, places for reclining) to invoke their Lord in fear and in longing (from Him); and they expend of what We have provided them.
