Tafsir of verse 51
Al-Mukhtasar
Allah, may He be glorified, said to all His servants: Do not take two beings of worship. The being deserving of worship is only one who has no second nor any partner. So fear Me only and do not fear others besides Me.
Allah said, “Do not take two gods31. He is only One God, so fear Me alone.”
Notes
[31] i.e., more than one.
And Allâh said (O mankind!): "Take not ilâhain (two gods in worship). Verily, He (Allâh) is (the) only One Ilâh15 (God). Then, fear Me (Allâh جل جلاله) much [and Me (Alone), i.e. be away from all kinds of sins and evil deeds that Allâh has forbidden and do all that Allâh has ordained and worship none but Allâh]16.
Notes
[15] (V.16:51) Ilâh: He Who has all the right to be worshipped.
[16] (V.16:51) Narrated ‘Ubâdah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "If anyone testifies that Lâ ilâha illallâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh Alone) Who has no partners, and that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is His slave and His Messenger, and that ‘Îsâ (Jesus) عليه السلام is Allâh’s slave and His Messenger and His Word ("Be!" - and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Rûh ) created by Him, and that Paradise is the truth, and Hell is the truth, Allâh will admit him into Paradise with the deeds which he had done even if those deeds were few." (Junadah, the subnarrator said, " ‘Ubâdah added,
‘Such a person can enter Paradise through any of its eight gates he likes.’ ") (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 4, Hadith No. 644).
Allah hath said: Choose not two gods. There is only One Allah. So of Me, Me only, be in awe.
Allah has said: "Take not (for worship) two gods: for He is just One Allah: then fear Me (and Me alone)."
And Allah has said: Take not two gods, He is only one Allah; so of Me alone should you be afraid.
And Allah has said, "Do not take to yourselves two gods. Surely He is only One God; so of Me, Me (only), then, have awe."
And to Allāh prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons.
Verses with similar wording
They share a sequence of words with this verse: useful for telling them apart when memorising.
Say, "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say, "Allāh is witness between me and you. And this Qur’ān was revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches. Do you [truly] testify that with Allāh there are other deities?" Say, "I will not testify [with you]." Say, "Indeed, He is but one God, and indeed, I am free of what you associate [with Him]."
This [Qur’ān] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.
