Tafsir of verse 81
Al-Mukhtasar
Then I made the earth swallow him and his house, along with all in it, in retribution for his transgression. He had no group to help him against Allah nor was he amongst those who can help themselves.
Then We caused the earth to swallow him and his house. There was no one to help him against Allah, nor was he able to help himself.
So We caused the earth to swallow him5 and his dwelling place. Then he had no group or party to help him against Allâh, nor was he one of those who could save themselves.
Notes
[5] (V.28:81) Chapter 5. Whoever drags his garment out of pride and arrogance (conceit).
a) Narrated Abû Hurairahرضي الله عنه : Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Allâh will not look, on the Day of Resurrection, at a person who drags his Izâr* (behind him) out of pride and arrogance." [See the footnote of (V.22:9)]
b) Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (or Abul-Qasim صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, "While a man was walking, clad in a two-piece garment and proud of himself with his hair well-combed, suddenly Allâh made him sink into the earth and he will go on sinking into it till the Day of Resurrection."
c) Narrated ‘Abdullâh (bin ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما): Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘While a man was dragging his Izâr* on the ground (behind him), suddenly Allâh made him sink into the earth and he will go on sinking into it till the Day of Resurrection." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.7, Hadith No.679, 680, 681).
Izâr: Lower-half body-cover.
So We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling-place. Then he had no host to help him against Allah, nor was he of those who can save themselves.
Then We caused the earth to swallow up him and his house; and he had not (the least little) party to help him against Allah, nor could he defend himself.
Thus We made the earth to swallow up him and his abode; so he had no body of helpers to assist him against Allah nor was he of those who can defend themselves.
So We caved in him and his home (into) the earth; then in no way did he have a community to vindicate him, apart from Allah; and in no way did he vindicate (himself).
