Tafsir of verse 27

Al-Mukhtasar

Those who break the promise they made with God to serve Him alone and follow His way. This is in the verse, “He made them testify concerning themselves: “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we bear witness!” (7:172) He affirmed this by sending the prophets and the scriptures. Those who do not take their promises with God seriously are those who cut off from things which God instructed not to, such as blood relations and they work to spread corruption on earth through their wrongdoing. They are the losers in this world and the next.

Tafsir of the whole Surah Al-Baqarah

Other translations of verse 27

those who break the covenant of Allah after it has been ratified, sever bonds that Allah has commanded to be maintained17, and spread corruption in the land. It is they who are the losers.

Notes

[17] By keeping good relations with kith and kin.

Those who break Allâh’s Covenant after ratifying it, and sever what Allâh has ordered to be joined (as regards Allâh’s religion of Islâmic Monotheism, and to practise its laws on the earth and also as regards keeping good relations with kith and kin7), and do mischief on earth, it is they who are the losers.

Notes

[7] (V.2:27) Narrated Jubair bin Mut‘im رضي الله عنه that he heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, "[القاطع] Al-Qâti‘ (the person who serves the bond of kinship) will not enter Paradise" (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.8, Hadîth No. 13).

Those who break the covenant of Allah after ratifying it, and sever that which Allah ordered to be joined, and (who) make mischief in the earth: Those are they who are the losers.

Those who break Allah's Covenant after it is ratified, and who sunder what Allah Has ordered to be joined, and do mischief on earth: These cause loss (only) to themselves.

Who break the covenant of Allah after its confirmation and cut asunder what Allah has ordered to be joined, and make mischief in the land; these it is that are the losers.

The ones who break the covenant of Allah even after its (binding) compact and cut (off) what Allah has commanded to be held together and corrupt in the earth, those are they (who are) the losers.
