Tafsir of verse 20
Al-Mukhtasar
The Jews who were given the Torah and the Christians who were given the Gospel recognise the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) completely, just as they recognise their own children from other children. They are the ones who have lost their own souls by making them enter the fire of Hell, and they will not believe.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize [Muhammad]5 just as they recognize their own sons. Those who have ruined their own souls will not believe.
Notes
[5] They had an exact description of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in their Scriptures.
Those to whom We have given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم as a Messenger of Allâh, and they also know that there is no Ilâh (God) but Allâh and Islâm is Allâh’s Religion), as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost (destroyed) themselves will not believe.3 (Tafsir At-Tabarî).
Notes
[3] (V.6:20) See the footnote of (V.3:85).
Those unto whom We gave the Scripture recognise (this revelation) as they recognise their sons. Those who ruin their own souls will not believe.
Those to whom We have given the Book know this as they know their own sons. Those who have lost their own souls refuse therefore to believe.
Those whom We have given the Book recognize him as they recognize their sons; (as for) those who have lost their souls, they will not believe.
The ones to whom We have brought the Book recognize it (just) as they recognize their sons. The ones who lost their (own) selves, so they do not believe.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] as they know their own sons. But indeed, a party of them conceal the truth while they know [it].
Say, "To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth?" Say, "To Allāh." He has decreed upon Himself mercy. He will surely assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who will lose themselves [that Day] do not believe.
