Fidya: How Much for a Missed Fast?

Fidya means feeding one poor person for each fasting day you will never be able to make up (old age, lasting illness), and in some schools in other cases too. Work it out in food or in money.

Work out the fidya

In money

In food

You may give it all to one poor person or share it out; a charity can do it for you.

Who owes fidya?

Fidya is owed

  • By the elderly person who can no longer fast, for each day.
  • By the sick person with no hope of recovery, for each day.
  • According to the Malikis, Shafi’is and Hanbalis: by whoever let a Ramadan pass without making up days they could have made up, in addition to making them up.
  • According to the Shafi’is and Hanbalis: by the pregnant or breastfeeding woman who did not fast for fear for the child, in addition to making up (for the Malikis: the breastfeeding mother).

Fidya does not replace

  • Days of menstruation and postnatal bleeding: they are made up by fasting, even years later.
  • Days of a temporary illness or of travel: they are made up.
  • Days broken on purpose: they are made up, and in some cases a kaffarah is due.

How much, by school

For one poor person and one day. Weights are modern, rounded equivalents.

SchoolMeasureIn kg (approx.)In money
Hanafihalf a sa’ of wheat, or one sa’ of dates or barley, or two meals1.625 kg of wheat; 3.25 kg of dates or barleyallowed (its value)
Malikione mudd of the staple foodabout 0.5 kgfood
Shafi’ione mudd of the staple foodabout 0.5 kgfood
Hanbalione mudd of wheat, or half a sa’ of another food0.5 kg of wheat; 1 to 1.5 kg of other foodfood

The Hanafis allow giving the value in money; the other schools require food, and Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Committee does not accept money. Most institutions in Europe, Turkey, Egypt, the Gulf and Asia publish an amount in money.

When and to whom?

When

Each day, or all at once at the beginning, the end or after the month, according to Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta and the Hanafis; the Shafi’is do not give it before the day concerned or its night.

To whom

To the poor and needy. Several days can be given to a single poor person, or one meal to a poor person each day.

Through a charity

A mosque or a charity can receive and distribute it for you: ask what amount they use and how they distribute it.

Fidya, kaffarah, zakat al-fitr: the differences

Fidya

Feeding one poor person for a fasting day you cannot fast, or in addition to making it up according to some schools.

Kaffarah

The expiation for a Ramadan day broken on purpose: two consecutive months of fasting, or sixty poor people to feed.

Zakat al-fitr

The charity at the end of Ramadan, due for each member of the household before the Eid prayer.

Sadaqah

Voluntary charity, at any time. It is encouraged but replaces neither a make-up nor a fidya that is due.

Zakat Al-Fitr: Purifies the fasting person and provides food for the poor

An organising tool, not a fatwa: it presents the views of the schools and institutions it names. For your own case, ask a scholar you trust.
