The noun ʿumran is not in the Quran, but its root is: “Only those who believe in Allah and the Last Day maintain (yaʿmuru) the mosques of Allah” (9:18); and Salih reminds his people: “He produced you from the earth and settled you in it (istaʿmarakum)” (11:61).
Meaning of the name Umran
ʿUmran is the verbal noun of ʿamara, “to inhabit, to populate, to make prosper” (root ʿ-m-r of life, ʿumr): the state of a land that is peopled, built and flourishing, the opposite of ruin. In the 14th century Ibn Khaldun made it the name of a science, ʿilm al-ʿumran, the study of civilisation. Ümran is a unisex name in Turkey; it should not be confused with ʿImran, the father of Maryam.
The mosques of Allāh are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakāh and do not fear except Allāh, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.
And to Thamūd [We sent] their brother Ṣāliḥ. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive."
Say, "If Allāh had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I had remained among you a lifetime before it. Then will you not reason?"
