CompanionIn the Quran“An acacia”: a large thorny tree of the Arabian desert
The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Al-Waqi’ah 56:29.
Talha ibn ʿUbayd Allah, one of the first Muslims, is one of the ten Companions to whom the Prophet ﷺ gave the good news of Paradise (al-Tirmidhi 3747). At Uhud he shielded the Prophet ﷺ with his hand, which remained paralysed (al-Bukhari 3724). He died at the Battle of the Camel in the year 36 of the Hijra.
Talha is the unit noun of talh, the name of a large thorny tree of the Arabian desert, of the acacia family, which gives shade and gum: talha means a single one of these trees. The word talh occurs once in the Quran, among the delights of Paradise: “talh trees layered with fruit” (56:29), which most commentators explain as banana trees. The name is mainly given in memory of the Companion Talha ibn ʿUbayd Allah.
Yes: the word Talha appears in the Quran once, in one surah.
