Boy Arabic origin Quṣayy
“The distant one”; name of an ancestor of the Prophet ﷺ
Qusayy ibn Kilab is an ancestor of the Prophet ﷺ: Muhammad son of ʿAbd Allah, son of ʿAbd al-Muttalib, son of Hashim, son of ʿAbd Manaf, son of Qusayy. Historians report that he gathered the clans of Quraysh in Mecca and took charge of the Kaʿba, hence his nickname mujammiʿ, “the gatherer”.
Qusayy is the diminutive of qasiyy, “far, distant” (root q-s-w): according to historians, the ancestor of Quraysh received this nickname because he grew up far from his homeland, among the Banu ʿUdhra, before returning to Mecca. His real name was Zayd. The name is given in Iraq, Syria and Jordan.
The name Qusay does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ق ص و) occurs 5 times. Examples:
فَحَمَلَتْهُ فَٱنتَبَذَتْ بِهِۦ مَكَانًا قَصِيًّا ٢٢
