Khubayb ibn ʿAdi al-Ansari was one of ten Companions sent on a scouting mission who fell into an ambush; taken prisoner, he was sold to Quraysh, who put him to death near Mecca. Before his execution he prayed two rakʿas and recited verses that became famous; he was thus the first to establish these two rakʿas for every Muslim put to death in captivity (al-Bukhari 3045).
Meaning of the name Khubayb
Khubayb is a diminutive built on the root kh-b-b: the lexicographer al-Mutarrizi sees it as the diminutive of khabab, the brisk pace of a horse or camel, and others as that of khabb or khubba, a strip of sand or cloth. Its exact meaning therefore remains uncertain. It should not be confused with Habib (حبيب, “beloved”), which sounds similar. The name is given in memory of the Companion Khubayb ibn ʿAdi; ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr bore the kunya Abu Khubayb.
