خَطَّاب
Boy Arabic origin Khaṭṭāb
“The eloquent orator”; the name of ʿUmar’s father
Al-Khattab ibn Nufayl, who died before Islam, is known above all as the father of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, the second caliph. The Quran uses the root for the decisive speech given to Dawud, “wisdom and decisive speech (fasl al-khitab)” (38:20).
Khattab is an intensive form of the root kh-t-b, that of speech (khutba) and of the marriage proposal (khitba): an orator who speaks often and well, and also one who often asks in marriage. The name is borne above all in memory of al-Khattab ibn Nufayl, father of the caliph ʿUmar, known as ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab.
The name Khattab does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (خ ط ب) occurs 12 times. Examples:
وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ ٢٠
And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and discernment in speech.
