In the authentic account of Kaʿb ibn Malik, one of the three Companions who stayed behind from the expedition of Tabuk, the king of Ghassan wrote inviting him to join him; Kaʿb threw the letter into the fire and remained loyal until Allah accepted their repentance (al-Bukhari 4418).
Meaning of the name Ghassan
Ghassan is first the name of a watering place where a branch of the great Yemeni tribe of Azd settled and took its name. Its princes, the Ghassanids, ruled the Arabs of Syria in the 6th century and up to the Muslim conquest, as allies of Byzantium. The root gh-s-n also gives ghaysan, “the freshness and vigour of youth”, hence the meaning “ardent youth” often given to the name. It is very common in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine.
