Compare

Faris in Islam

The word is not in the Quran. In the sense of “Persia”, it occurs in a saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “If religion were at the Pleiades, a man from Faris — or from the sons of Faris — would go and fetch it” (Muslim 2546); this has been seen as foretelling the great scholars from Persia.

Meaning of the name Faris

Faris is one who rides a horse (faras) skilfully, the horseman, and by extension the brave and noble knight; the root f-r-s is also that of perspicacity (firasa). Faris is also the Arabic name of Persia and its people. The name is very common in Algeria and Tunisia (Farès), the Middle East and the Gulf.
