Amal in Islam
The word occurs twice in the Quran: “Wealth and children are the adornment of worldly life; but the enduring good deeds are better with your Lord in reward and better in hope” (18:46). The other verse warns against hope that distracts (15:3).
Meaning of the name Amal
Amal is the verbal noun of amala, “to hope”: it is the expectation of a desired good. Muslim moralists distinguish hope that spurs action from the “long hope” (tul al-amal) that makes one forget death. A very common feminine name: Amel in the Maghreb, Amal in the Middle East, Emel in Turkey.
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
