The grandmothers’ share

A grandmother (maternal or paternal) receives one sixth when the mother is not alive; two grandmothers share it.

The grandmother’s share comes from the Sunnah: al-Mughira ibn Shu‘ba and Muhammad ibn Maslama testified before Abu Bakr that the Prophet ﷺ had given the grandmother one sixth (reported by Abu Dawud, no. 2894).

The mother excludes all grandmothers. The father excludes his own mother (the paternal grandmother) according to the Hanafis, Malikis and Shafi‘is; the Hanbalis let her inherit with him. The father never excludes the mother’s mother.

The schools differ on great-grandmothers (how many, and through which lines): this calculator handles the father’s mother and the mother’s mother.
