لَمَّا حملَتْ حَوَّاءُ طاف بها إبليسُ، وكان لا يَعيشُ لها ولَدٌ، فقال: سَمِّيه: عبدَ الحارثِ؛ فإنَّهُ يَعيشُ، فسمَّتْهُ عبدَ الحارثِ فعاشَ، وكان ذلكَ مِن وحْيِ الشَّيْطانِ وأمْرِهِ.
