حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ صَالِحٍ، مَوْلَى التَّوْأَمَةِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، رضى الله عنه عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏

"‏ مَا جَلَسَ قَوْمٌ مَجْلِسًا لَمْ يَذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ فِيهِ وَلَمْ يُصَلُّوا عَلَى نَبِيِّهِمْ إِلاَّ كَانَ عَلَيْهِمْ تِرَةً فَإِنْ شَاءَ عَذَّبَهُمْ وَإِنْ شَاءَ غَفَرَ لَهُمْ ‏"

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"No people sit in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah and do not invoke blessings upon their Prophet, except that it will be a source of regret for them. If He wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He will forgive them."

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warned against neglecting the remembrance of Allah, stating that no group of people sit in a gathering where they do not remember Allah Almighty and do not invoke blessings upon His Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), except that such a gathering will be a source of regret, remorse, loss, and deficiency for them on the Day of Judgment. If Allah wills, He will punish them for their past sins and future shortcomings, and if He wills, He will forgive them out of His grace and mercy.

Lessons

  • Encouraging Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and highlighting its merit.
  • The merit of gatherings in which Allah Almighty is remembered and His Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) is mentioned, and that gatherings without these are ominous for their people on the Day of Judgment.
  • The warning mentioned against heedlessness of remembering Allah is not restricted to gatherings; rather, it includes other things as well. An-Nawawi said: It is disliked for one who sits in a place to leave it without remembering Allah Almighty therein.
  • The grief they experience on the Day of Judgment is either because of missing the reward and recompense for not utilizing time in obeying Allah, or because of incurring sin and being subject to punishment for spending the time in disobeying Allah.
  • If this warning is against heedlessness caused by what is permissible, then what about the prohibited gatherings that involve backbiting, talebearing, and other prohibitions?!

Explanation in Arabic

حَذَّرَ النبيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِن الغفلة عن ذِكْر الله، وأنه ما قَعَدَ قوم في مجلسٍ ولم يذكروا الله تعالى فيه، ولم يصلوا على رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلا كان ذاك المجلس حَسْرة عليهم ونَدَامة وخسارة ونقصانًا يوم القيامة، فإن شاء عذّبهم بذنوبهم السابقة وتقصيراتهم اللاحقة، وإن شاء غفر لهم فضلًا منه ورحمة.

  • الحث على الذكر وفضله.
  • فضل المجالس التي فيها ذكر الله تعالى، وذكر رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأن المجالس التي ليس فيها ذلك هي مجالس شُؤْمٍ على أهلها يوم القيامة.
  • ما ذُكر من التحذير عن الغفلة عن ذكر الله ليس مُقتصرًا على المجالس فقط، بل يَعُمُّ غيرها، قال النووي: يكره لمن قعد في مكان أن يفارقه قبل أن يذكر الله تعالى فيه.
  • الحسرة الحاصلة لهم يوم القيامة: إما بفوات الأجر والثواب لعدم الاستفادة من الوقت في طاعة الله، وإما بالإثم والعقاب لإشغال الوقت بمعصية الله.
  • هذا التحذير إذا كانت هذه الغفلة بالمباحات، فكيف بالمجالس المحرمة التي فيها الغيبة والنميمة وغيرها؟!

قَوْلُهُ : ( وَلَمْ يُصَلُّوا عَلَى نَبِيِّهِمْ ) تَخْصِيصٌ بَعْدَ تَعْمِيمٍ ( إِلَّا كَانَ ) أَيْ ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِسُ ( عَلَيْهِمْ تِرَةً ) بِكَسْرِ التَّاءِ وَتَخْفِيفِ الرَّاءِ تَبِعَةً وَمُعَاتَبَةً أَوْ نُقْصَانًا وَحَسْرَةً مِنْ وَتَرَهُ حَقَّهُ نَقَصَهُ وَهُوَ سَبَبُ الْحَسْرَةِ , وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى " لَنْ يَتِرَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ " وَالْهَاءُ عِوَضٌ عَنْ الْوَاوِ الْمَحْذُوفَةِ مِثْلُ عِدَةٍ وَهُوَ مَنْصُوبٌ عَلَى الْخَبَرِيَّةِ " فَإِنْ شَاءَ عَذَّبَهُمْ " أَيْ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ السَّابِقَةِ وَتَقْصِيرَاتِهِمْ اللَّاحِقَةِ " وَإِنْ شَاءَ غَفَرَ لَهُمْ" أَيْ فَضْلًا مِنْهُ وَرَحْمَةً وَفِيهِ إِيمَاءٌ بِأَنَّهُمْ إِذَا ذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ لَمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمْ حَتْمًا بَلْ يَغْفِرُ لَهُم…

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whenever a group of people sit in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah the Exalted, nor supplicate to elevate the rank of their Prophet, such a gathering will be a cause of grief to them. If Allah wills, He will punish them, and if He wills He will forgive them."…

وعنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ ‏"‏ما جلس قوم مجلساً لم يذكروا الله تعالى فيه، ولم يصلوا على نبيهم فيه، إلا كان عليهم ترة؛ فإن شاء عذبهم، وإن شاء غفر لهم‏"‏ ((رَوَاهُ التِّرمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: "حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ"))‏.‏

He reported God's messenger as saying, "If people sit in an assembly in which they do not remember God or invoke a blessing on their Prophet, vengeance will descend upon them. If God will He will punish them, but if He wills He will forgive them.” Tirmidhi transmitted it.
