حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنِ الصَّوْمِ فَقَالَ ‏:

‏ ‏‏(‏ حَتََّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ ‏)‏ قَالَ فَأَخَذْتُ عِقَالَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَبْيَضُ وَالآخَرُ أَسْوَدُ فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمَا فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم شَيْئًا لَمْ يَحْفَظْهُ سُفْيَانُ قَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّمَا هُوَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ ‏"

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim:

"I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the fast, he said: 'Until the white (light) thread of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night)'" - he said: "So I took two ropes, one white and the other black to look at them. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me" - it was something that Sufyan (a sub narrator) did not remember - so he said: "It is only the night and the day."

Al-Mubarakfuri — Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi

قَوْلُهُ : ( عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ ) بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ الْكُوفِيُّ لَيْسَ بِالْقَوِيِّ وَقَدْ تَغَيَّرَ فِي آخِرِ عُمْرِهِ مِنْ صِغَارِ السَّادِسَةِ. قَوْلُهُ : ( فَأَخَذْت عِقَالَيْنِ ) بِكَسْرِ الْعَيْنِ الْمُهْمَلَةِ أَيْ حَبْلَيْنِ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ خَيْطَيْنِ مِنْ شَعْرٍ ( شَيْئًا لَمْ يَحْفَظْهُ سُفْيَانُ ) وَحَفِظَهُ غَيْرُهُ وَهُوَ قَوْلُهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ وِسَادَك لَعَرِيضٌ ". كَمَا فِي رِوَايَةِ مُسْلِمٍ الْمُتَقَدِّمَةِ ( فَقَالَ ) أَيْ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ( إِنَّمَا هُوَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ ) يَعْنِي أَنَّ الْمُرَادَ بِالْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ اللَّيْلُ وَبِالْخَيْطِ الْأَبْيَضِ النَّهَارُ وَالْمَعْنَى حَتَّى يَ…

he asked the Messenger of Allah about the verse "Until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)." He said: "It is the blackness of the night and the whiteness of the day." '

I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! What is the meaning of the white thread distinct from the black thread? Are these two threads?" He said, "You are not intelligent if you watch the two threads." He then added, "No, it is the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the day.''

إِنَّكَ لَعَرِيضُ الْقَفَا إِنْ أَبْصَرْتَ الْخَيْطَيْنِ ‏"‏‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ لاَ بَلْ هُوَ سَوَادُ اللَّيْلِ وَبَيَاضُ النَّهَارِ ‏"
