حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏

"‏ احْتَجَّتِ الْجَنَّةُ وَالنَّارُ فَقَالَتِ الْجَنَّةُ يَدْخُلُنِي الضُّعَفَاءُ وَالْمَسَاكِينُ ‏.‏ وَقَالَتِ النَّارُ يَدْخُلُنِي الْجَبَّارُونَ وَالْمُتَكَبِّرُونَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ لِلنَّارِ أَنْتِ عَذَابِي أَنْتَقِمُ بِكِ مِمَّنْ شِئْتُ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ لِلْجَنَّةِ أَنْتِ رَحْمَتِي أَرْحَمُ بِكِ مَنْ شِئْتُ ‏"

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Paradise and Hellfire argued with each other (each claiming to be better than the other). Paradise said: ‘The weak and poor will enter me.’ Hellfire said: ‘The tyrants and arrogant will enter me.’ He said to Hellfire: ‘You are My punishment with which I will exact revenge upon whomever I wish.’ Then He said to Paradise: ‘You are My mercy with which I will show mercy to whomever I wish.’”

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs us that Paradise and Hellfire argued before their Lord, meaning that each of them presented the proofs of its superiority, each claiming to be better than the other. This is one of the matters of the unseen which we must believe in even if our minds deem it unlikely. Paradise argued with Hellfire, saying that the weak and poor from mankind will be in it, for most of them are those who incline towards the truth and submit to it. Then Hellfire argued that the tyrants – who are stern and harsh – will be in it, as well as the arrogant – who are haughty, proud, despise others and deny the truth. The tyrant and arrogant are the inhabitants of Hellfire – Allah’s refuge is sought – because most of the time they do not submit to the truth. Then Allah, the Almighty, judged between them, saying to Hellfire: You are My punishment with which I will punish whomever I wish, and will exact revenge upon whomever I wish. Then He said to Paradise: You are My mercy with which I will show mercy to whomever I wish, meaning that it is the abode that was created out of the mercy of Allah. It is not His mercy that is one of His permanent attributes, rather, the mercy mentioned here is a creature. ‘You are My mercy’ means ‘I created you from My mercy, and with you I will show mercy to whomever I wish.’ The inhabitants of Paradise are the people of Allah’s mercy, whereas the inhabitants of Hellfire are the people of Allah’s punishment.

Explanation in Arabic

يخبر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن الجنة والنار احتجتا عند ربهما، أي: أن كل واحدة منهما أظهرت حجج التفضيل، فكل واحدة تدعي الفضل على الأخرى، وهذا من الأمور الغيبية، التي يجب علينا أن نؤمن بها حتى وإن استبعدتها العقول، فالجنة احتجت على النار، فقالت: إن فيها ضعفاء الناس وفقراء الناس، فهم في الغالب الذين يلينون للحق وينقادون له، واحتجت النار بأن فيها الجبارين وهم أصحاب الغلظة والقسوة، والمتكبرين وهم أصحاب الترفع والعلو، والذين يحتقرون الناس ويردُّون الحق، فأهل الجبروت وأهل الكبرياء هم أهل النار والعياذ بالله؛ لأنهم في الغالب لا ينقادون للحق، فقضى الله عز وجل بينهما فقال للنار: أنتِ عذابي أعذب بك من أشاء، وأنتقم بك ممن أشاء، وقال للجنة: أنت رحمتي أرحم بك من أشاء، يعني: أنها الدار التي نشأت من رحمة الله، وليست رحمته التي هي صفته؛ لأن رحمته التي هي صفته وصف قائم به، لكن الرحمة هنا مخلوق، أنت رحمتي يعني خلقتك برحمتي، أرحم بك من أشاء، فأهل الجنة هم أهل رحمة الله، وأهل النار هم أهل عذاب الله تعالى .

  • احتجاج الجنة والنار من الأمور الغيبية التي يجب علينا أن نؤمن بها، حتى وإن استبعدتها العقول.
  • الفقراء والضعفاء هم أهل الجنة؛ والجبارون المتكبرون هم أهل النار.
  • إثبات كلام الله -عز وجل- للجنة وللنار.
  • إثبات صفة المشيئة لله -عز وجل- على ما يليق بجلال الله -سبحانه-.
  • الرحمة نوعان: الأولى: رحمة صفة لله تعالى غير مخلوقة، والثانية: رحمة مخلوقة، وهي الجنة.

قَوْلُهُ : ( اِحْتَجَّتْ ) أَيْ اِخْتَصَمَتْ كَمَا فِي رِوَايَةٍ لِلْبُخَارِيِّ. وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى لَهُ وَلِمُسْلِمٍ تَحَاجَّتْ ( يَدْخُلُنِي الضُّعَفَاءُ وَالْمَسَاكِينُ ) قِيلَ مَعْنَى الضَّعِيفِ هَاهُنَا الْخَاضِعُ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى بِبَذْلِ نَفْسِهِ لَهُ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى ضِدَّ الْمُتَجَبِّرِ وَالْمُتَكَبِّرِ , وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ لِلْبُخَارِيِّ : " مَا لِي لَا يَدْخُلُنِي إِلَّا ضُعَفَاءُ النَّاسِ وَسَقَطُهُمْ ". قَالَ الْحَافِظُ : أَيْ الْمُحْتَقَرُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ السَّاقِطُونَ مِنْ أَعْيُنِهِمْ , هَذَا بِالنِّسْبَةِ إِلَى مَا عِنْدَ الْأَكْثَرِ مِنْ النَّاسِ , وَبِالنِّسْبَةِ إِلَى مَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ هُمْ عُظَمَاءُ رُفَعَاءُ الدَّرَجَاتِ لَكِنَّهُمْ بِالنِّسْبَةِ إِلَى مَا عِنْدَ…
