أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الأَنْصَارِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ صُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَقَدِ اتَّخَذَ حَلْقَةً مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَقَالَ ‏

"‏ مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَصُوغَ عَلَيْهِ فَلْيَفْعَلْ وَلاَ تَنْقُشُوا عَلَى نَقْشِهِ ‏"

It was narrated that Anas said:

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] came out wearing a silver ring. He said: 'Whoever wants to make a ring like this, let him do so, but do not put the same inscription.'"

Ziyad b. Sa'd, Shu'aib and Ibn Musafir transmitted it from al-Zuhri. 'Ali said in their versions: "of silver".

رَأَى فِي يَدِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَاتَمًا مِنْ وَرِقٍ يَوْمًا وَاحِدًا فَصَنَعَ النَّاسُ فَلَبِسُوا وَطَرَحَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَطَرَحَ النَّاسُ ‏.‏

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had a silver ring made for himself and it was worn by him on his hand. Afterwards it was worn by Abu Bakr, and then by `Umar, and then by `Uthman till it fell in the Aris well. (On that ring) was engraved: 'Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah."

The Prophet (ﷺ) got a ring made for himself and said, "I have got a ring made (for myself) and engraved a certain engraving on it so none of you should get such an engraving on his ring." I saw the glitter of the ring on his little finger.

إِنَّا اتَّخَذْنَا خَاتَمًا، وَنَقَشْنَا فِيهِ نَقْشًا، فَلاَ يَنْقُشْ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ فَإِنِّي لأَرَى بَرِيقَهُ فِي خِنْصَرِهِ

Authentic Sahih al-Bukhari 3106

That when Abu Bakr became the Caliph, he sent him to Bahrain and wrote this letter for him, and stamped it with the Ring of the Prophet. Three lines were engraved on the Ring, (the word) 'Muhammad' was in a line, 'Apostle' was in another line, and 'Allah' in a third.

وَكَانَ نَقْشُ الْخَاتَمِ ثَلاَثَةَ أَسْطُرٍ مُحَمَّدٌ سَطْرٌ، وَرَسُولُ سَطْرٌ، وَاللَّهِ سَطْرٌ‏.‏
