أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، وَالْحَارِثُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ، قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ، وَاللَّفْظُ، لَهُ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَاسِمِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيَّ، وَهُوَ بِمِصْرَ يَقُولُ وَاللَّهِ مَا أَدْرِي كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ بِهَذِهِ الْكَرَايِيسِ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏

"‏ إِذَا ذَهَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى الْغَائِطِ أَوِ الْبَوْلِ فَلاَ يَسْتَقْبِلِ الْقِبْلَةَ وَلاَ يَسْتَدْبِرْهَا ‏"

It was narrated from Rafi' bin Ishaq that he heard Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari say - when he was in Egypt:

"By Allah, I do not know what I should do with these Karais (toilets). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When any one of you goes to defecate or urinate, let him not face toward the Qiblah, nor turn his back towards it."

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan al-Nasa'i

( وَهُوَ بِمِصْرَ ) رِوَايَة الصَّحِيحَيْنِ تُفِيد أَنَّ الْأَمْر كَانَ بِالشَّامِ وَلَا تَنَافِي لِإِمْكَانِ أَنَّهُ وَقَعَ لَهُ هَذَا فِي الْبَلْدَتَيْنِ جَمِيعًا ( بِهَذِهِ الْكَرَايِيس ) بِيَاءَيْنِ مُثَنَّاتَيْن مِنْ تَحْت يَعْنِي بُيُوت الْخَلَاء قِيلَ وَيُفْهَم مِنْ كَلَام بَعْض أَهْل اللُّغَة أَنَّهُ بِالنُّونِ ثُمَّ الْيَاء وَكَانَتْ تَلِك الْكَرَايِيس بُنِيَتْ إِلَى جِهَة الْقِبْلَة فَثَقُلَ عَلَيْهِ ذَلِكَ وَرَأَى أَنَّهُ خِلَاف مَا يُفِيدهُ الْحَدِيث بِنَاء عَلَى أَنَّهُ فَهِمَ الْإِطْلَاق لَكِنْ يُمْكِن أَنْ يَكُون مَحْمَل الْحَدِيث الصَّحْرَاء وَإِطْلَاق اللَّفْظ جَاءَ عَلَى مَا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ الْعَادَة يَوْمئِذٍ إِذْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُمْ كُنُف فِي الْبُيُوت فِي أَوَّل الْأَمْر و…

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) forbade us to face the Qiblah when defecating or urinating, or to clean ourselves using the right hand, or to clean ourselves with less than three stones, or to clean ourselves with dung or a bone [Reported by Muslim].

"أَنْ نَسْتَقْبِلَ اَلْقِبْلَةَ بِغَائِطٍ أَوْ بَوْلٍ, أَوْ أَنْ نَسْتَنْجِيَ بِالْيَمِينِ, أَوْ أَنْ نَسْتَنْجِيَ بِأَقَلَّ مِنْ ثَلَاثَةِ أَحْجَارٍ, أَوْ أَنْ نَسْتَنْجِيَ بِرَجِيعٍ أَوْ عَظْمٍ"

The polytheists said to us: I see that your companion teaches you everything, even how to relieve yourselves. He said: Yes, indeed. He forbade us from using our right hand for cleaning ourselves, or facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer), and he prohibited us from using dung and bones, and said…

The Prophet (ﷺ) went out to answer the call of nature and asked me to bring three stones. I found two stones and searched for the third but could not find it. So took a dried piece of dung and brought it to him. He took the two stones and threw away the dung and said, "This is a filthy thing."

"I am like a father teaching you. When any one of you goes to Al-Khala' (the toilet), let him not face toward the Qiblah nor turn his back toward it, and let him not clean himself with his right hand." And he used to tell them to use three stones, and he forbade using dung or old bones.
