Narrator:Jābir ibn Samurah

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنِ الْقِبْطِيَّةِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، قَالَ كُنَّا نُصَلِّي خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَنُسَلِّمُ بِأَيْدِينَا فَقَالَ ‏

"‏ مَا بَالُ هَؤُلاَءِ يُسَلِّمُونَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمْسٍ أَمَا يَكْفِي أَحَدَهُمْ أَنْ يَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِهِ ثُمَّ يَقُولَ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ ‏"

It was narrated that Jabir bin Samurah said:

"We used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and we would greet (others) with our hands. He said: 'What is the matter with those who greet (others) with their hands as if they were tails of wild horses? It is sufficient for any one of you to put his hand on his thigh and say: "As-salamu 'alaikum, as-salamu 'alaikum."

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan al-Nasa'i

( فَنُسَلِّم ) أَيْ فِي الصَّلَاة وَبِهَذِهِ الرِّوَايَة تَبَيَّنَ أَنَّ الْحَدِيث مَسُوق لِلنَّهْيِ عَنْ رَفْع الْأَيْدِي عِنْد السَّلَام إِشَارَة إِلَى الْجَانِبَيْنِ وَلَا دَلَالَة فِيهِ عَلَى النَّهْي عَنْ الرَّفْع عِنْد الرُّكُوع وَعِنْد الرَّفْع مِنْهُ وَلِذَلِكَ قَالَ النَّوَوِيّ الِاسْتِدْلَال بِهِ عَلَى النَّهْي عَنْ الرَّفْع عِنْد الرُّكُوع وَعِنْد الرَّفْع مِنْهُ جَهْلٌ قَبِيحٌ وَقَدْ يُقَال الْعِبْرَة بِعُمُومِ اللَّفْظ وَلَفْظ مَا بَالهمْ رَافِعِينَ أَيْدِيهمْ فِي الصَّلَاة إِلَى قَوْله اُسْكُنُوا فِي الصَّلَاة تَمَام فَصَحَّ بِنَاء الِاسْتِدْلَال عَلَيْهِ وَخُصُوص الْمُورِد لَا عِبْرَة بِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يُقَال ذَلِكَ إِذَا لَمْ يُعَارِضهُ عَنْ الْعُمُوم عَارِض وَإِلَّا يُحْمَل ع…

"I said to Ibn 'Umar: "Tell me about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ); how was it?" He mentioned the takbir and he mentioned: As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah (peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah) to his right and: As-salamu 'alaykum (peace be upon you) to his left."

فَذَكَرَ التَّكْبِيرَ قَالَ يَعْنِي وَذَكَرَ ‏"‏ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ" عَنْ يَمِينِهِ, "السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ" عَنْ يَسَارِهِ."

Authentic Sunan an-Nasa'i 1184

"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out to us and we were raising our hands during the Salah. He said: 'Why are you raising your hands while praying, like the tails of wild horses? Stay still when you are praying.'"
