Narrated by Sa‘d ibn Ubāda

"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed judgement based on an oath along with one witness." Rabi'ah (one of the narrators) said: "A son of Ibn Sa'd bin 'Ubadah informed me saying: 'We found in a book of Sa'd that the Prophet (ﷺ) passed judgement based on an oath along with a witness.'"

نَذْرٍ كَانَ عَلَى أُمِّهِ فَتُوُفِّيَتْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقْضِيَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ اقْضِهِ عَنْهَا ‏"

"Sufyan narrated to us from Az-Zuhri, from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that Sa'd said: 'My mother died and there was an (outstanding) vow that she had to fulfill. I asked the Prophet and he told me to fulfill it on her behalf.'"

مَاتَتْ أُمِّي وَعَلَيْهَا نَذْرٌ فَسَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْضِيَهُ عَنْهَا‏.‏

O Messenger of Allah, ’Umm Sa‘d died. Which charity is the best?" He said: 'Water.' He said: So, he dug a well and said: "This is for ’Umm Sa‘d

الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ ‏"‏ الْمَاءُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَحَفَرَ بِئْرًا وَقَالَ هَذِهِ لأُمِّ سَعْدٍ

"O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died; can I give charity on her behalf?" He said: "Yes." He said: "What kind of charity is best?" He said: "Providing drinking water." And that is the drinking-fountain of Sa'd in Al-Madinah.

أُمِّي مَاتَتْ أَفَأَتَصَدَّقُ عَنْهَا قَالَ ‏"‏ نَعَمْ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَىُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ ‏"‏ سَقْىُ الْمَاءِ ‏"
