they would listen to ten verses from the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and not move to the next ten verses until they learned the knowledge and application contained therein
‘Abdur-Rahmān as-Sulami (may Allah have mercy upon him) reported:
Those who used to recite the Qur’an to us from among the Prophet's Companions related to us that they would listen to ten verses from the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and not move to the next ten verses until they learned the knowledge and application contained therein. They said: So, we learned knowledge and application.
The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would receive ten verses from the Qur’an and not move to other verses until they learned the knowledge contained in those ten verses and acted upon it. Thus, they learned knowledge and application together.
Lessons
The Hadīth highlights the merit of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and their keenness on learning the Qur’an.
The proper learning of the Qur’an is done by gaining the knowledge contained therein and acting upon it, not by merely memorizing it.
Knowledge precedes speech and application.

كان الصحابة رضي الله عنهم يَتَلَقَّون مِن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عشر آيات مِن القرآن، ولا ينتقلون إلى غيرها حتَّى يتعلَّموا ما في هذه العشر من العلم ويعملون به، فعلموا العلم والعمل معًا.
فضل الصحابة رضي الله عنهم وحرصهم على تعلم القرآن.
تعلم القرآن يكون بالعلم والعمل بما فيه، وليس بقراءته وحفظه فقط.
العلم يكون قبل القول والعمل.
