Narrator:Ā’ishah

وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، وَحَسَنٌ الْحُلْوَانِيُّ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ زَيْدٍ، قَالَ حَسَنٌ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، حَدَّثَنِي الضَّحَّاكُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ

لَمَّا بَدَّنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَثَقُلَ كَانَ أَكْثَرُ صَلاَتِهِ جَالِسًا ‏.‏

'A'isha reported:

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) grew bulky and heavy he would observe (most of his Nafl) prayers sitting.

An-Nawawi — Sharh Sahih Muslim

قَوْلهَا : ( لَمَّا بَدَّنَ رَسُول اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَثَقُلَ كَانَ أَكْثَر صَلَاته جَالِسًا ) قَالَ الْقَاضِي عِيَاض - رَحِمَهُ اللَّه - : قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْد فِي تَفْسِير هَذَا الْحَدِيث : بَدَّنَ الرَّجُل - بِفَتْحِ الدَّال - الْمُشَدَّدَة تَبْدِينًا إِذَا أَسَنَّ. قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْد : وَمَنْ رَوَاهُ ( بَدُنَ ) بِضَمِّ , الدَّال الْمُخَفَّفَة فَلَيْسَ لَهُ مَعْنَى هُنَا , لِأَنَّ مَعْنَاهُ كَثُرَ لَحْمه وَهُوَ خِلَاف صِفَته صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , يُقَال : بَدَنَ يَبْدُن بَدَانَة , وَأَنْكَرَ أَبُو عُبَيْد ( الضَّمّ ) قَالَ الْقَاضِي : رِوَايَتنَا فِي مُسْلِم عَنْ جُمْهُورهمْ ( بَدُنَ ) بِالضَّمِّ , وَعَنْ الْعُذْرِيّ بِالتَّشْدِيدِ , وَأَرَاهُ إِصْلَاحًا…

"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not pass away until most of his prayers were offered sitting down, except for the obligatory prayers, and the dearest of actions to him were those which were done persistently, even if they were few."

مَا مَاتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم حَتَّى كَانَ أَكْثَرُ صَلاَتِهِ قَاعِدًا إِلاَّ الْفَرِيضَةَ وَكَانَ أَحَبُّ الْعَمَلِ إِلَيْهِ أَدْوَمَهُ وَإِنْ قَلَّ ‏.‏

Authentic Sunan Ibn Majah 1225

‘By the One Who took his soul (i.e., the soul of the Prophet (ﷺ)), he did not die until he offered most of his prayers sitting down. And the dearest of the actions to him was the righteous action that the person does regularly, even if it were a little.”

كَانَ أَكْثَرُ صَلاَتِهِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ وَكَانَ أَحَبُّ الأَعْمَالِ إِلَيْهِ الْعَمَلَ الصَّالِحَ الَّذِي يَدُومُ عَلَيْهِ الْعَبْدُ وَإِنْ كَانَ يَسِيرًا ‏.‏
