Narrator:Abu Hurayrah

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، - يَعْنُونَ ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ - عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏

التَّثَاؤُبُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا تَثَاءَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَكْظِمْ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ ‏"

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

The yawning as from the devil. So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power.

Reported by Muslim (No. 2994), Al-Bukhari (No. 3289), At-Tirmidhi (No. 370) and Ahmad (No. 8797).

An-Nawawi — Sharh Sahih Muslim

قَوْله صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ( التَّثَاؤُب مِنْ الشَّيْطَان ) أَيْ مِنْ كَسَله وَتَسَبُّبه , وَقِيلَ : أُضِيفَ إِلَيْهِ لِأَنَّهُ يُرْضِيه. وَفِي الْبُخَارِيّ أَنَّ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّه تَعَالَى يُحِبّ الْعُطَاس , وَيَكْرَه التَّثَاؤُب " قَالُوا : لِأَنَّ الْعُطَاس يَدُلّ عَلَى النَّشَاط وَخِفَّة الْبَدَن , وَالتَّثَاؤُب بِخِلَافِهِ لِأَنَّهُ يَكُون غَالِبًا مَعَ ثِقَل الْبَدَن وَامْتِلَائِهِ , وَاسْتِرْخَائِهِ وَمَيْله إِلَى الْكَسَل. وَإِضَافَته إِلَى الشَّيْطَان لِأَنَّهُ الَّذِي يَدْعُو إِلَى الشَّهَوَات. وَالْمُرَاد التَّحْذِير مِنْ السَّبَب الَّذِي يَتَوَلَّد مِنْهُ ذَلِكَ , وَهُوَ التَّوَسُّع فِي الْمَأْكَل وَإِكْثَار الْأَكْل.…

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at him."

التَّثَاؤُبُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَإِذَا تَثَاءَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَرُدَّهُ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا قَالَ هَا‏.‏ ضَحِكَ الشَّيْطَانُ ‏"

Yawning inside the prayer is from the devil, so if anyone of you yawns, let him suppress it as much as he can

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yawning inside the prayer is from the devil, so if anyone of you yawns, let him suppress it as much as he can."

"‏ التَّثَاؤُبُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِذَا تَثَاءَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَكْظِمْ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ ‏"

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Yawning is caused by the devil, so when one of you yawns he must repress it as much as he can." [Reported by Muslim].

Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying, “Yawning during prayer comes from the devil, so when one of you yawns he must restrain it as much as possible.” Tirmidhi transmitted it. In another version by him and by Ibn Majah it says, “He should put his hand over his mouth.”
