Narrator:Anas ibn Mālik

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، جَمِيعًا عَنِ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

إِذَا دَعَا أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَعْزِمْ فِي الدُّعَاءِ وَلاَ يَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَعْطِنِي فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ مُسْتَكْرِهَ لَهُ ‏"

Anas reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

When one of you makes supplication, he should supplicate with a will and should not say: O Allah, confer upon me if Thou likest, for there is none to coerce Allah.

Reported by Muslim (No. 2678), Al-Bukhari (No. 6338) and Ahmad (No. 11542).

An-Nawawi — Sharh Sahih Muslim

قَوْله صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ( إِذَا دَعَا أَحَدكُمْ فَلْيَعْزِمْ فِي الدُّعَاء , وَلَا يَقُلْ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ شِئْت فَأَعْطِنِي فَإِنَّ اللَّه لَا مُسْتَكْرِه لَهُ ) وَفِي رِوَايَة : ( فَإِنَّ اللَّه صَانِع مَا شَاءَ لَا مُكْرِه لَهُ ) وَفِي رِوَايَة : ( وَلْيَعْزِمْ الرَّغْبَة فَإِنَّ اللَّه لَا يَتَعَاظَمهُ شَيْء أَعْطَاهُ ) قَالَ الْعُلَمَاء : عَزْم الْمَسْأَلَة الشِّدَّة فِي طَلَبهَا , وَالْجَزْم مِنْ غَيْر ضَعْف فِي الطَّلَب , وَلَا تَعْلِيق عَلَى مَشِيئَة وَنَحْوهَا , وَقِيلَ : هُوَ حُسْن الظَّنّ بِاَللَّهِ تَعَالَى فِي الْإِجَابَة. وَمَعْنَى الْحَدِيث : اِسْتِحْبَاب الْجَزْم فِي الطَّلَب , وَكَرَاهَة التَّعْلِيق عَلَى الْمَشِيئَة , قَالَ الْعُلَمَاء : سَبَب كَرَاهَته أ…
