Narrator:Rāfi‘ ibn Khadīj

وَحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرٌ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُضَرَ - عَنِ ابْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ أَبِي، بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَرَّمَ مَكَّةَ وَإِنِّي أُحَرِّمُ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا ‏"

Rafi' b. Khadij reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Ibrahim declared Mecca as sacred and I declare sacred the area between its two stony grounds (lava lands by which he meant Medina).

Reported by Muslim (No. 1361a) and Ahmad (No. 16634, 16636).

An-Nawawi — Sharh Sahih Muslim

قَوْله صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ( إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيم حَرَّمَ مَكَّة , وَإِنِّي أُحَرِّم مَا بَيْن لَابَتَيْهَا ) يُرِيد الْمَدِينَة , قَالَ أَهْل اللُّغَة وَغَرِيب الْحَدِيث : ( اللَّابَتَانِ ) الْحَرَّتَانِ , وَاحِدَتهمَا ( لَابَة ) , وَهِيَ الْأَرْض الْمُلْبَسَة حِجَارَة سَوْدَاء , وَلِلْمَدِينَةِ لَابَتَانِ شَرْقِيَّة وَغَرْبِيَّة , وَهِيَ بَيْنهمَا , وَيُقَال : لَابَة وَلُوبَة وَنُوبَة , بِالنُّونِ ثَلَاث لُغَات مَشْهُورَات , وَجَمْع اللَّابَة فِي الْقِلَّة لَابَات , وَفِي الْكَثْرَة لَابٌ وُلُوب. وَقَوْله صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ( وَإِنِّي أُحَرِّم مَا بَيْن لَابَتَيْهَا ) مَعْنَاهُ : اللَّابَتَانِ وَمَا بَيْنهمَا , وَالْمُرَاد تَحْرِيم الْمَدِينَة وَلَابَتَيْهَا.…

Medina is a sacred territory, so he who made any innovation in it. or gave protection to an innovator, there is upon him the curse of Allah, that of the angels and that of all the people. There would not be accepted on the Day of Resurrection either obligatory acts or supererogatory acts from him.
