وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ أُسَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعُمَيْسِ، أَخْبَرَنِي قَيْسٌ، فَذَكَرَ بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ

يَصُومُونَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ يَتَّخِذُونَهُ عِيدًا وَيُلْبِسُونَ نِسَاءَهُمْ فِيهِ حُلِيَّهُمْ وَشَارَتَهُمْ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ فَصُومُوهُ أَنْتُمْ ‏"

Abu Musa reported that the people of Khaibar (most of them were Jews) observed fast on the day of 'Ashura and they treated it as 'Id and gave their women ornaments and beautiful dresses to wear. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

You (only) observe fast on this day.

An-Nawawi — Sharh Sahih Muslim

قَوْله : ( وَيُلْبِسُونَ نِسَاءَهُمْ فِيهِ حُلِيَّهُمْ وَشَارَتَهُمْ ) ( الشَّارَة ) بِالشِّينِ الْمُعْجَمَة بِلَا هَمْزٍ وَهِيَ الْهَيْئَة الْحَسَنَة وَالْجَمَال , أَيْ يُلْبِسُونَهُنَّ لِبَاسَهُمْ الْحَسَنَ الْجَمِيلَ , وَيُقَال لَهَا : الشَّارَة وَالشُّورَة بِضَمِّ الشِّين , وَأَمَّا ( الْحَلْي ) فَقَالَ أَهْل اللُّغَة : هُوَ بِفَتْحِ الْحَاء وَإِسْكَان اللَّام مُفْرَد وَجَمْعه ( حُلِيّ ) بِضَمِّ الْحَاء وَكَسْرهَا , وَالضَّمّ أَشْهَر وَأَكْثَر , وَقَدْ قُرِئَ بِهِمَا فِي السَّبْع , وَأَكْثَرهمْ عَلَى الضَّمّ , وَاللَّام مَكْسُورَة وَالْيَاء مُشَدَّدَة فِيهِمَا.…

The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered a man from the tribe of Bani Aslam to announce amongst the people that whoever had eaten should fast the rest of the day, and whoever had not eaten should continue his fast, as that day was the day of 'Ashura' .
