حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ الأَوْدِيِّ، عَنِ الْهُزَيْلِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم

ـ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْجَوْرَبَيْنِ وَالنَّعْلَيْنِ ‏.‏

It was narrated from Mughirah bin Shu'bah that:

The Messenger of Allah performed ablution and wiped over his socks and his sandals.

قَوْله ( وَمَسْح عَلَى الْجَوْرَبَيْنِ ) قِيلَ الْجَوْرَب لِفَافَة رِجْل وَقِيلَ هُوَ غِطَاء لِلْقَدَمِ يُتَّخَذ لِلْبَرْدِ ( وَالنَّعْلَيْنِ ) أَوَّلُوهُ بِأَنَّهُ لُبْس النَّعْلَيْنِ فَوْق الْجَوْرَبَيْنِ وَقِيلَ مَسْح النَّعْلَيْنِ وَالْجَوْرَبَيْنِ جَمِيعًا لَا أَنَّهُ مَسْح عَلَى كُلّ مِنْهُمَا بِانْفِرَادِهِ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَكَانَ عَبْد الرَّحْمَن بْن مَهْدِيّ لَا يُحَدِّث بِهَذَا الْحَدِيث لِأَنَّ الْمَعْرُوف عَنْ الْمُغِيرَة أَنَّ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَقَالَ الْحَافِظ مُغِيرَة هَذَا ضَعَّفَهُ عَبْد الرَّحْمَن بْن مَهْدِيّ وَغَيْره مِنْ الْأَئِمَّة.…

If the religion were based on opinion, it would be more important to wipe over the under parts of the leather socks than the upper, but I have seen Allah’s Messenger (rad) wiping over the upper parts of his leather socks. [Reported by Abu Da’ud with good Isnad (chain of narrators)].

I was with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when he arrived at the dump of some people and passed urine while standing. I stepped aside, but he said: "Draw near." So, I drew near until I stood behind his heels, and he performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks.
